  • From Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Moved to Nashville in 1978.
  • He is best known as a songwriter with more than 900 songs recorded and more than 100 gold or platinum awards, ten ASCAP awards and 36 top ten chart hits. He has written hit songs for George Strait (“Fool Hearted Memory”), Ray Charles, Alabama, Anne Murray, Joe Nichols, George Jones, Ed Bruce, Tracy Byrd, Keith Whitley, Neal McCoy and many others. His songs have also been recorded by many bluegrass artists including the Lonesome River Band, Dailey & Vincent, The Special Consensus, The Seldom Scene, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Fast Track, Doc Watson, The Whites and many others.
  • 2018, he was inducted into Nashville’s Songwriters Hall of Fame.
  • As a musician/vocalist, he has recorded several solo projects of his original songs, including his first bluegrass album (2024) That Old Mountain (BHP).
